Empowering Global Student Teachers for Transformative Teaching and Learning in a Globalized World

under the CUHK Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG) (3rd Call) for 2022-25 Triennium (1 June 2024 - 30 April 2025) (with a grant of HK$244,800)

The aim of the project “Empowering Global Student Teachers for Transformative Teaching and Learning in a Globalized World” is to provide student teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in diverse educational contexts. Through this cutting-edge initiative, student teachers will be equipped with the tools and expertise required to thrive in a rapidly changing globalized world.

The Project is conducted in a cross-regional, cross-institutional teacher education programme, where students (pre-service teachers) directly participate in a wide range of learning and teaching activities, covering:
  • Four immersive local thematic workshops in collaboration with the Museum of Climate Change (MoCC), Ocean Park Hong Kong, Hong Kong Wetland Park, Coral Academy, and The Nature Conservancy Hong Kong (TNC-HK), centred on marine conservation.
  • Three dynamic Virtual Thematic Pedagogy Workshops designed for student teachers and in-service teachers to enhance their virtual teaching skills and navigate online intercultural learning environments.
  • Four impactful Global Curriculum Planning Sessions featuring synchronous club meetings focused on UN SDG14 (Life below Water). This inclusive initiative involves preservice teachers, international university students, and middle school student groups from at least five countries.
  • Engaging global participation through four specially curated lessons for middle school students (aged 10-13) worldwide, providing valuable teaching experience for student teachers.
  • Weekly reflection meetings for preservice teachers to openly discuss and exchange successful or challenging leadership moments, fostering collaborative learning opportunities.
  • Development of a progressive e-Learning Platform for Global Education, facilitating the sharing of students’ reflective posts, digital stories, workshop outlines, and valuable insights with stakeholders.

Building a Sustainable World Together: Global Dialogues for Nature Conservation and Education
under the CUHK Funding Scheme for Initiatives on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, supported by the Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG) (2nd Call) for 2022-25 Triennium (1 April 2024 - 30 April 2025) (with a grant of HK$300,000)

The Project "Building a Sustainable World Together: Global Dialogues for Nature Conservation and Education"  is a cross-regional, cross-institutional teacher education programme, aiming to:
  1. build students’ capacity in conducting global dialogues by providing opportunities to interact with individuals from different cultural backgrounds;
  2. empower students as global citizens by equipping them with intercultural communicative competences;
  3. initiate dialogues that involve participants from diverse cultural backgrounds; and
  4. build a Global Community of Practice by connecting with stakeholders from around the world.
In the Project, students (pre-service teachers) directly participate in a wide range of learning and teaching activities, including:
  • Eight themed on-site workshops with three dimensions of learning – intercultural communicative competences, nature conservation, and education for sustainable development
  • Five synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (at different times) dialogue sessions with local and
  • international institutions and ESD practitioners
  • One e-Learning Community of Practice (CoP) Platform for Global Dialogues

Fostering a Teacher Learning Community: Integrating Digital Storytelling into Marine Conservation Education for Primary Schools
under the  CUHK Pedagogical Development and Technology-enhanced (PDTL) Grant 2023-2024 (1 March 2024 - 30 April 2025) (with a grant of HK$50,000)

The project "Fostering a Teacher Learning Community: Integrating Digital Storytelling into Marine Conservation Education for Primary Schools" aims to enhance marine conservation education in primary schools by integrating digital
storytelling pedagogy, with a focus on creating a collaborative inquiry- and content-focused teacher learning community
to facilitate the integration of digital storytelling pedagogy into primary science curriculum. The teacher learning
community is composed of paired-up teachers from Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Primary) (PGDP) students
majoring and minoring in General Studies (i.e., pre-service teachers) and in-service General Studies teachers from
participating local primary schools. The collaborative inquiry of marine conservation education, integrated with a digital
storytelling approach, consists of four phases of teachers' professional learning, including:
  • specialist workshops, seminars and field trips, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills in marine conservation education
  • pedagogical application of digital storytelling approach through co-designing marine conservation units in classrooms
  • experimentation of pedagogical designs of the designated units in classrooms through collaborative lesson planning, peer observation and reflection with the specialists
  • development of a YouTube Channel to share learning and teaching materials, and personal digital stories of participating teachers' reflections on teaching and learning, with the wider teacher community and the public

EDUC3150 Global Dialogues on Education for Sustainable Development in the Curriculum
initiated in the Project "Global Dialogues for Education for Sustainability (EfS)", under the CUHK Grant Scheme for Internationalisation of Curriculum, supported by the Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG) for 2019-22 Triennium (1 January 2021 - 30 April 2022)  (with a grant of HK$100,000)

EDUC3150 attempts to promote understanding of the self and transform the ways students view themselves and navigate the world regarding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) issues. During the course, students can have opportunities to connect, communicate, and interact with “global peers” around the world through “global dialogues”. Global dialogues can help bring together scholars and students from different parts of the world, share their experiences and views upon ESD issues, build a growing network of people with interests in ESD, and make available an accessible body of comparative information and knowledge about current and emerging issues in ESD.
